Discussion Two

1. Discuss a controversial issue or question related to your topic:

Sexual Identity is a very controversial issue in today’s society. There are so many variations in sexual identity, and many of them are not accepted in today’s society. Homosexuality is the most widely discussed because of its taboo nature and because it is the most common. Many believe that being homosexual is a choice; whereas others believe that it is naturally developed. This causes lots of friction in today’s political debates, amongst activists on both sides, and even in daily life. This is such an issue because for years our society has only accepted man and wife as okay, now that the homosexual community is more open and fighting for equal rights it is now more common to see or hear of. Now with the further variations of sexual identity these issues get more complicated because there is not a cut and dry label society can place on them.

Sexual identity does not mean specifically sexual orientation; it means the sex you most identify with. For example, one may look and be categorized as one sex, but inside completely feel as if they are the opposite sex. This causes lots of controversy in society and it makes the terms male and female obsolete.

  1. Yes...people don't like gray area! Society likes categories and fear of the unknown is usually responsible for discrimination and violence. I have to constantly monitor how much information I give someone about my true self, for fear of being judged or ostracized. It sucks. (anna l.)

  2. When people are placed with people that they see a lot such as Jr. high and High School the teens tend to play the gay game by trying to make other guys seem gay. This then causes boys to monitor their behavior to avoid being labeled this name. It happened in HS a lot. Even though no one was gay these labels help the males become "masculine" and avoid doing girly things.[David]

  3. I personally don't believe that sexuality should even be an issue in this day and age. Its unfortunate that people are not treated equally for being something other then straight. What most people don't understand is that name calling, such as, " fag" has a huge impact on men especially when they are going through phases of their life during the teen years. Its also unfortunate that many religious groups look down on people for not having a man and women relationship.

  4. Interesting article! A point I would like to make is why the origins of sexual orientation promotes such debate. There is overwhelming evidence that homosexual acts occur in nature. (i.e. natural) And it seems that most social disapproval of homosexuality is cultural based. (i.e. religion) But if we were to remove cultural disapproval for homosexuality I ask what is wrong with being gay or lesbian? Or if some individuals are transgendered.

  5. Not that I don't believe in identical sexuality, but we are born as who we are with unique parts that separates us from being man or woman. I believe we were created based on a system. Therefore, I disagree homosexual.

I believe there can be feminism in guys, masculinity in women. But that's just the personality, we shouldn't cross the line of sexuality. [Eric C.]
